Get Ready/Emergency Preparedness
Get Ready is a 1.5-2 hour preparedness program, which was started in Marin County approximately 10 years ago. Taught in the classroom by trained volunteers with a mixture of lecture and discussion, the goal is to provide the tools for a family to be prepared for the local natural disasters inherent to northern California, for example, earthquake, flooding and wildland fire.
Participants are provided with information on the following:
- What items to include in an emergency bin, including food & water, flashlights & batteries, medications and a first aid kit
- How to sign up for the county’s emergency notification systems
- What to have in your Grab & Go Bag
- What to know about evacuation from a wildland fire, including where to go and what to take
Participants are encouraged to know their neighbors and to help those that would need assistance in an emergency. Programs such as Community Emergency Response Team (CERT), Marin Medical Reserve Corp (MMRC) and Red Cross are discussed and participants are encouraged to take first aid and CPR training.
